Junior doctors' hours and the expanding role of the nurse
Article Abstract:
The Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, England, has commissioned an educational programme aimed at supporting nurses in expanding their role. This is taking place against a background of nurses taking on many of the tasks traditionally performed by junior doctors. The nurses undertaking the programme developed a policy according to which procedures delegated by medical staff would be undertaken on the night shift and, in certain cases, on the evening shift. Nurses were not prepared to undertake these procedures if they perceived a danger of compromising patient care.

The named nurse in Scotland: time for action runs short
Article Abstract:
It may not be possible to introduce the named-nurse system completely in Scotland by the original deadline of Jun 1997, according to Ann Jarvie, chief nursing officer, Scottish Office Home and Health Department (SOHHD). A considerable amount of change is required in order to ensure the full implementation of this system, and extensive investment will be required in members of staff, resources and processes of care. There are still very mixed views about the named-nurse system as a whole.
