Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy versus total abdominal hysterectomy: a prospective, randomized, multicenter study
Article Abstract:
Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy appears to be more effective than abdominal hysterectomy. During a vaginal hysterectomy, the uterus is removed through the vagina. Many surgeons are unwilling to do this, especially if the uterus is relatively large. In 58 women, researchers used a laparoscope inserted through the bellybutton to surgically disconnect the uterine ligaments and then removed the uterus through the vagina. These women had fewer complications, lost less blood, had less postoperative pain and shorter hospital stays than 58 women who had an abdominal hysterectomy.

Subcutaneous drainage versus no drainage after minilaparotomy in gynecologic benign conditions: a randomized study
Article Abstract:
Draining the space created during a minilaparotomy can reduce the number of surgical complications as well as the length of hospital stay, according to a study of 72 women who had this operation. The women whose surgical incision was drained had fewer complications and shorter hospital stays than women who did not receive this postoperative treatment. The incision created during a minilaparotomy contains a small space that can grow bacteria.

Postoperative administration of monophasic combined oral contraceptives after laparoscopic treatment of ovarian endometriomas: a prospective, randomized trial
Article Abstract:
Oral contraceptives do not substantially reduce the risk of recurrence in women who have surgery to remove ovarian endometriosis. Endometriosis occurs when parts of the inner lining of the uterus flow out of the uterus and settle on other organs.
