Article Abstract:
Nurses are confronted with many advertisements for training events, but it is not easy to determine the quality of these events. The Post-Registration Education and Practice proposals from the UKCC say that all practitioners should undertake a period of professional learning before they are registered, but nurses need more information on how informative and relevant a particular event will be. Nurses must be more active in defining what they expect from such training events, and in demanding quality for themselves. Governing bodies could also look at monitoring professional conferences

Management of a nursing home in Normandy, France provides a model for caring treatment of the elderly. Unhurried courteous treatment of residents creates a welcoming environment. Mealtimes are a focal point of the day providing social opportunities. Special practices on Sundays provide a break from routine. Residents also pleasurably anticipate monthly birthday celebrations. Attention to individual preferences in personal matters ensure high quality of life.

Qualified excess?

Nurses may place too much emphasis on gaining academic qualfications. Personal development is more important than letters following a name. Continuing education is essential for updating skills or extending experience. However, emphasis should be on the qualities or skills that are achieved.
