Living again: family treatment at KIDS of North Jersey
Article Abstract:
KIDS of North Jersey is a treatment center for substance-abusing teenagers and young adults in River Edge, NJ, that emphasizes the participation of patients' families as essential to recovery. KIDS seeks to ensure that this strong family support will continue until these young people achieve addiction-free maturity in their mid-20s. The facility's program of family treatment comprises five steps: the breaking of parental denial, temporarily freeing the young people from family environment, dealing with issues and resentments, developing detachment and attaining a healthful lifestyle.

Illicit drug availability in rural areas and attitudes toward their use - young people talking
Article Abstract:
A cross-section of young people living in rural areas in Lincolnshire, UK, were asked a range of questions about drug use. The study found that drugs such as cannabis and ecstasy are readily available and affordable, while hard drugs like heroin are less so. Young people were knowledgable about different types of drugs and the effects they have and felt it was safe to take them. There is considerable peer pressure to try drugs and they are taken for a wide variety of social and personal reasons. Health education programmes have to be aware of this.
