Making a fresh start
Article Abstract:
A case study concentrates on problems that occur when patients do not cooperate with treatment, and focuses particularly on a patient's ulcer treatment. The patient was unhappy about wearing support stockings as part of the treatment, and it was determined that he had little knowledge of the cause of his condition. This was explained and he was able to wear elasticated tubular bandages over the dressing, for a time which he was more familiar with. However he was reintroduced to compression which is the only way the ulcer would heal, and became more involved in the treatment options with help from the nurse.

Light relief
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted by community nurses in North Yorkshire, UK, into the effectiveness of low-power laser therapy as a treatment for leg ulcers. The study lasted 15 weeks and involved 14 patients whose ulcers were not responding to treatment. Conventional treatment was given to eight patients and six had laser therapy. Those receiving conventional treatment showed more improvement than those who received laser therapy. However further research is needed with a larger sample to fully assess the potential of laser therapy.

Focus on teamwork
Article Abstract:
Wound management in patients with diabetes can be a lengthy and complicated process. In the case of a severe plantar ulcer, for example, constant supervision is required. Patients may have to stay in hospital until the wound begins to heal, but can then be responsible for a large part of their own care at home. It is important that each health professional involved in the patient's care is fully integrated into the caring team.
