Meeting mental health needs of ethnic minority groups
Article Abstract:
Mainstream service often do not provide appropriate care to those from minority ethnic groups with mental health problems. TULIP (Haringey Mental Health Group) was set up to meet the needs of people being discharged from a large psychiatric unit into the community and those who were falling through the net of mainstream services, such as minority ethnic groups. The outreach team (OT) was initially influenced by an intensive comunity support team, The Bridge, which encourages clients to depend on a service instead of individuals. Early indictions show a successful team approach by the TULIP OT team.

Reducing health risks in ethnic communities
Article Abstract:
The UK government should promote a healthier lifestyle amongst ethnic minority groups, emphasizing the need to reduce the incidents of hypertension, which is more prevalent in such communities. Research has shown up to 35% of Afro-Caribbean and Asian men suffer a degree of hypertension, compared with the national UK average of up to 20% of men. Ethnic communities should be educated as to the benefits of exercise, dietary improvements and a reduction in smoking, all of which can help reduce hypertension and the associated risk of stroke.
