Seeing it believing
Article Abstract:
The UK Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) is seeking to raise awareness of the specific eye problems facing certain groups within the community. Glaucoma is a prevalent eye disease which affects people from the African and Afro-Caribbean community, therefore it is important for people from such groups to have regular eye tests and be aware of symptoms which indicate the onset of the disease. The RNIB is also stressing the need for people to take a positive attitude to sight problems, such as making the most of any vision left with the help of visual aids.

Sight specific
Article Abstract:
It is important for community nurses to assess patients for vision dysfunction, taking note of risk levels, especially where a patient is either elderly, diabetic or belongs to the Afro-Caribbean community, where the prevalence of glaucoma is extremely high. The four main types of condition which result in reduced or lost vision are acute and normal glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts. All conditions need the support of a community nurse to help the patient build confidence, remain independent and have access to appropriate support services.
