Methodology citations and the quality of randomized controlled trials in obstetrics and gynecology
Article Abstract:
Scientific researchers who conduct randomized controlled trials need to be very familiar with the correct methodology to use to ensure that their results are correct. Researchers searched four obstetrics and gynecology journals for randomized controlled trials published in 1990 and 1991 and identified 206 articles. Only 38 articles (18.4%) cited one or more methodology references in their bibliography. Documentation of methodology references was significantly associated with documentation of adequate concealment of randomization. The British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology had the highest percentage of correctly done trials. Incorrect methods may produce inadequate trials and incorrect results, which could lead to changes in medical practice that are not beneficial to patients.

Primary and preventive care in a university obstetrics and gynecology group practice
Article Abstract:
Obstetrician-gynecologists may be considered to be primary care providers. Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of 335 patient records within a university OB-GYN group practice. Out of 1032 patient problems diagnosed by an OB-GYN, 89% involved some primary care. Patient complaints were obstetric (27.7%), gynecologic (65.4%), or other (6.9%). Almost all of the patients' conditions, 97.4%, were handled by an OB-GYN. Only 19.7% of the non-OB-GYN problems were referred to a specialist. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists defines a primary care physician as the physician a patient contacts first. OB-GYNs are specialists, yet their training should include primary care.
