Sexual transmission and the natural history of human herpesvirus 8 infection
Article Abstract:
Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) may be highly prevalent among homosexual men, and could be a sexually-transmitted factor in the development of Kaposi's sarcoma. Kaposi's sarcoma is an opportunistic cancer that develops in some people infected with HIV. Researchers tested 400 HIV-infected men and 400 uninfected men for antibodies to HHV-8. Antibodies were detected in 38% of men reporting a history of homosexual activity, and in none of the exclusively-heterosexual men. The probability of developing Kaposi's sarcoma in men infected with both HIV and HHV-8 was almost 50% over ten years.

Propagating Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus
Article Abstract:
Recent success in independently replicating Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) may lead to further knowledge about the role this virus plays in Kaposi's sarcoma. Researchers have used kidney cells infected with KSHV to reproduce infectious levels of the virus. Infected cells were themselves, however, adversely affected by the virus. Future research using reproducible KSHV may answer whether KSHV causes Kaposi's sarcoma, how widespread the infection is, and when and where it reproduces naturally.
