Metronidazole: utilization in the obstetric and gynecologic patient
Article Abstract:
Metronidazole appears to be a useful drug in treating anaerobic and protozoal infections with little drug resistance and few risks. It has been used for more than 30 years in the U.S. to treat bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and Trichomonas vaginalis, yet drug resistant strains have not emerged. Oral and intravenous routes of administration allow more of the drug to be used by the body than when the drug is applied to the rectal or vaginal areas. Metronidazole taken orally may possibly cause birth defects if used in the first trimester of pregnancy. It may prevent preterm labor and birth resulting from vaginal infection. Metronidazole has not been shown to cause cancer in humans, as has been reported in animal studies.

The association of psychosocial stress and bacterial vaginosis in a longitudinal cohort
Article Abstract:
A study to assess the association of psychosocial stress with bacterial vaginosis in a longitudinal sample of nonpregnent women was conducted. The results revealed that increased psychosocial stress is associated with greater bacterial vaginosis prevalence and incidence independent of other risk factors.
