Salmonellosis Associated With Chicks and Ducklings--Michigan and Missouri, Spring 1999
Article Abstract:
Two outbreaks of Salmonella poisoning in Michigan and Missouri illustrate the dangers of letting young children play with chicks and ducklings. Salmonella is usually transmitted by contaminated food, but many animals secrete the bacterium in their feces. In the spring of 1999, 21 people in Michigan developed Salmonella poisoning and 82% had handled chicks or ducklings. Of 40 similar patients in Missouri, 97% had handled chicks or ducklings. All children should be taught to wash their hands after playing with chicks, ducklings, and other young fowl.

Multidrug-resistant Salmonella serotype typhimurium - United States, 1996
Article Abstract:
The Definitive Type 104 (DT104) strain of Salmonella typhimurium has been detected in the US. This strain first surfaced in the UK in 1984. It is resistant to many antibiotics, including ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin and tetracycline. It may be developing resistance to trimethoprim and ciprofloxacin, which could be a serious development. Evidence so far indicates it may be harbored by farm animals. In Nebraska in Oct, 1996, 19 school children became ill and this strain of Salmonella typhimurium was isolated from several stool specimens.
