Multivariate survival analysis of clinicopathologic features in surgical stage I endometrioid carcinoma including analysis of HER-2/neu expression
Article Abstract:
The overexpression of the HER-2/neu gene in endometrial tissue samples may be an independent prognostic indicator of survival in women with endometrial cancer. This gene produces a membrane protein that is similar to the epidermal growth factor receptor. Researchers stained endometrial tissue samples taken from 71 women who had a hysterectomy for stage I endometrioid carcinoma with monoclonal antibodies against the HER-2/neu protein. The samples were also analyzed for aneuploidy, which is an abnormal number of chromosomes. Seventeen (24%) of the samples demonstrated an overexpression of the HER-2/neu protein and overexpression of the protein was associated with invasion of the tumor into the myometrium, which is the middle layer of the uterus. HER-2/neu overexpression, tumor invasion and aneuploidy were associated with a worse prognosis. Women with none of these factors survived longer than women with one or more.

Angiogenesis factor in endometrial carcinoma: a new prognostic indicator?
Article Abstract:
Growth of new blood vessels in uterine cancer tumors may predict their metastasis and recurrence. Researchers compared tumor samples from 25 women with recurrent uterine cancer to 25 women with nonrecurring uterine cancer. The number of capillaries were counted in all samples. Tumors from women with recurring cancer contained more capillaries than tumors from women with nonrecurring cancer. Tumors with fewer capillaries were associated with longer survival than tumors with higher capillary counts. Capillary counts in uterine cancer tumors could predict which patients may need extensive cancer treatment.

Endometrial endometrioid carcinoma: A glimpse at the nature course
Article Abstract:
The natural course of endometrial endometrioid carcinoma is assessed by identifying untreated patients and those with a prolonged treatment delay. The lengthy survival of these patients has indicated that the natural progression course, even in untreated patients, might be slow in endometrial carcinoma with favorable prognostic factors.
