National vaccine distribution debated
Article Abstract:
Fewer than 60% of US children are immunized properly, and epidemics of preventable diseases may occur if the vaccination rate is not increased. In addition, the price of many vaccinations has increased over 50-fold since 1977. The American Medical Assn is calling for a vaccination program through the Centers for Disease Control grant program. Another solution may be for state health departments or the US government to buy vaccines in bulk to get a lower price. Drug companies, however, may stop manufacturing vaccines if they cannot derive enough profit from them.

A little exercise goes a long way in cardiovascular health
Article Abstract:
The American Heart Assn (AHA) has added physical inactivity to its list of risk factors for coronary heart disease. In a statement published in the Jul 1992 issue of Circulation, the AHA stresses the benefits of light to moderate physical exercise such as walking, gardening or dancing. Sedentary individuals are five to eight times as likely to develop some form of cardiovascular disease. A physically inactive lifestyle is responsible for 250,000 deaths annually in this country, according to Centers for Disease Control statistics.

Chronic disease management boosts self-esteem, cuts costs
Article Abstract:
Kate Lorig, a health researcher at Stanford University, reports that self-care education can reduce costs and benefit patients, particularly those suffering from chronic diseases. Arthritis patients who entered Lorig's training program enjoyed enhanced control over their lives in addition to decreased pain, disability and depression. Lorig presented her research results at a National Health Management Foundation conference during which she received an award for health education.
