Shifting to Medicaid managed care
Article Abstract:
New York state will begin mandatory managed care for Medicaid patients in the fall of 1997. The plan, which includes $1.2 billion in federal aid through 2001, was approved by the federal government for the 2.4 million people receiving Medicaid. Hospitals have expressed concern about the treatment of indigents and uninsured patients, but proponents of the plan say cutting the inefficient parts of the state's Medicaid system will help make up for the reimbursement decrease of at least 8%.

Infant mortality down - but not because of TennCare
Article Abstract:
TennCare is not responsible for the record drop in Tennessee's infant mortality rate due to its restricted access to prenatal care. Patient advocates point out that many TennCare health maintenance organizations do not provide patients with direct access to obstetricians and gynecologists, and emphasize that early intervention generates huge savings in future medical costs.
