OSHA's Safety Program Standard: one size fits all?
Article Abstract:
The plan of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to develop a safety program standard that would be applicable to all workplace conditions has been met with criticisms from various sectors. But the OSHA is rising to the challenge by gathering inputs from as many employers in all industry types to make the program applicable to all industry types. Some of the suggestions include a recognition of corporate worker safety programs and voluntary workplace safety programs of small companies or union-initiated safety programs.

Joint safety committees: make employees part of your safety team
Article Abstract:
Some occupational health and safety experts believe that most companies prefer voluntary joint safety committees over mandatory committees. They stress that voluntary committees would be more effective and would encourage more people to participate. Employers agree that employee involvement is key to the success of a safety and health program. Some observers, however, feel that the voluntary approach is inappropriate because American management does not fully accept the concepts of worker power and worker organization.

Europe puts its mark on U.S. product safety
Article Abstract:
Compliance with new EC standards for product safety can prove to be complicated and time-consuming for US exporters. Nevertheless, exporters view the new system to be a long-term solution to the separate standards of the EC's 12 member nations. This unification will make Europe more attractive to foreign manufacturers. These standards will also be imposed on European manufactured goods.
