Objective markers of condom failure
Article Abstract:
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing of vaginal fluid samples after condom-protected intercourse may accurately detect semen exposure indicating condom failure. Researchers instructed women to collect vaginal samples with swabs before and after unprotected intercourse. The levels of acid phosphatase and human seminal plasma antigen were variable, but the PSA level consistently and markedly rose from very low levels to high levels after semen exposure. This test could be used to objectively test condoms, or for self-testing by women after sexual intercourse with a condom.
