One more fallen angel
Article Abstract:
A former nurse explains her reasons for leaving the profession. Her concern about holistic care being replaced with crisis management is discussed. Her frustration at the amount of office-based work she was required to undertake and at the increasingly fragmented nature of patient care is recalled. The pressures of working with inadequate resources and of being unable to meet patients' real needs are detailed. Her plans to study herbal medicine are discussed.

A lesson in grief
Article Abstract:
A nurse has learnt the value of sensitive support for relatives of severely-injured accident victims. Uncertainty of her role prevented her revealing the extent of his injuries. However, after waiting two hours to see their son the parents were informed that he was unlikely to recover. She regretted that she had not better prepared them for this outcome. She also regretted the lack of opportunity to discuss the case with colleagues.

A broken promise
Article Abstract:
A newly qualified nurse expressed regret that she allowed an elderly patient to die alone. The nurse was unable to sit with the patient due to pressure of work. She felt she failed the patient by not responding to his request for company. However, the nurse considered she learnt a valuable lesson that subsequently changed her practice.
