Hematopoietic engraftment and survival in adult recipients of umbilical-cord blood from unrelated donors
Article Abstract:
Umbilical cord blood can be used in adult leukemia patients even if it comes from a non-matching donor. In a study of 68 patients who received a cord blood transplant, 26% were still alive and disease-free up to 40 months later.

Overcomes after transplantation of cord blood or bone marrow form unrelated donors in adults with leukemia
Article Abstract:
The outcomes of the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells are compared form unrelated donors in adults with leukemia who received cord blood that was mismatched for one HLA antigen or two antigens, bone marrow that had one HLA mismatch and HLA-matched bone marrow. Cox proportional-hazards models were used to analyze the data.

Outcomes among 562 recipients of placental-blood transplants from unrelated donors
Article Abstract:
Transplantation of fetal cord blood may be effective in treating leukemia and other diseases requiring a bone marrow transplant. Cord blood is taken from the umbilical cord at the time of birth and stored for later use. Researchers gave a cord blood transplant to 562 patients, 67% of whom had leukemia. In 85% of patients, the transplanted cells became part of their immune system and developed into mature cells. However, about one-fourth of the patients developed a severe complication of transplantation called graft-versus-host disease.
