Study confirms: drug prices higher in U.S
Article Abstract:
A General Accounting Office study showed that prescription drugs are far more expensive in the US than in Canada or other countries. The study, delivered to the House Energy and Commerce Committee health subcommittee, demonstrated that many drugs cost at least 50% less in Canada than in the US. Canadian drug prices are controlled by federal price limit regulations and the bargaining power of provincial governments who buy the drugs in bulk. A proposed Prescription Drug Prices Review Board Act of 1993 would establish a group to track and disseminate drug pricing data and recover government benefits from companies that overcharge for drugs.

FDA, drug makers enter era of good feeling over user fees
Article Abstract:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the pharmaceutical industry are working to implement a program whereby pharmaceutical companies would pay a user's fee to the FDA to fund the salaries of FDA drug reviewers. Increasing the number of drug reviewers would speed up the approval process and save money for the pharmaceutical companies. The program, which will be put in place over five years, will eventually charge companies a one-time fee not more than $233,000. Firms with fewer than 500 employees will be charged half that amount. Six-month drug approval by 1997 is the goal for drugs to treat life-threatening diseases.
