Patients don't always reveal their sexual orientation
Article Abstract:
The Council of Scientific Affairs is encouraging physicians to consider the effects of a patient's sexual orientation on the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. Gays and lesbians present certain behaviors and health risks which may be overlooked by physicians. The council is endorsing additional educational programs for heath care professionals and more community involvement between the gay and lesbian and medical communities.

An estimated 400,000 survivors of torture live in the United States
Article Abstract:
Torture victims can make up between 5% to 10% of a physician's foreign-born patients, but their reluctance to provide information can make diagnosis difficult. Recommendations include comfortable surroundings, gaining patient trust and treating specific conditions first, such as infectious diseases or injuries. Referral services offer mental health assistance and support networks.
