Antimicrobials best therapy for bacteria-related ulcers
Article Abstract:
McMaster University and St. Joseph's Hospital physician Bernie O'Brien is advising the use of antimicrobials for initial treatment when duodenal ulcers are found in patients. The treatment is an effective and relatively inexpensive way to eradicate Helicobacter pylori. Three possible approaches include an acid-suppressor ranitidine preceding triple antibiotic therapy or omeprazole plus amoxicillin for immediate eradication; ranitidine therapy for H. pylori eradication when the ulcer recurs the first time; and continuous maintenance therapy using ranitidine. All methods are evaluated.

Effective counseling for teens takes planning, empathy
Article Abstract:
Counseling of adolescents should include annual scheduled appointments to afford contact and prevent problems. Assuring privacy, the physician should discuss test results and family relationships. Also, the doctor should ask about the patient's agenda, listen carefully, and offer assistance in making decisions. Teenagers can be referred to other professionals, such as nurse practitioners, teachers, or church leaders. The AMA Dept. of Adolescent Health offers a handbook based on GAPS, which stands for gathering and assessing information, and identifying problems and solutions.
