Patterns of intra-familiar distribution of undernutrition: methods and applications for developing societies
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the patterns of intra-familiar association of undernutrition and to compare the nutritional status within the family. The data used in the study was from a national survey on health and nutrition in Brazil in 1989. Undernutrition was measured by using body mass index for adults and weight-for-age for children below the 5th percentile of healthy and nourished population. Results show that undernutrition is present among families belonging to the poorest 31% whose earnings are below the extreme poverty line.

Shifting obesity trends in Brazil
Article Abstract:
The pattern of obesity in Brazil has become increasingly complex. Rises in obesity now tend to be much more marked in men than in women, in rural than in urban environments and in poorer than in wealthier families. A key trend has been a reduction in obesity among women belonging to upper income groups, especially in urban environments. The increasingly prevalence of obesity in Brazil can be attributed partly to the strong growth of the services sector, bringing less physically demanding occupations, especially for men.

The nutrition transition in Brazil
Article Abstract:
A study of the nutritional condition of Brazilians indicates a change from nutrition deficiency to overnutrition. Families in the lower income group exhibit increased obesity, implying an inverse relationship between socioeconomics and obesity. Females in the middle income class are the most obese women.
