Phase II, randomized, open-label, community-based trial to compare the safety and activity of combination therapy with recombinant interferon-alpha2b and zidovudine versus zidovudine alone in patients with asymptomatic to mildly symptomatic HIV infection
Article Abstract:
The use of combination therapy consisting of zidovudine with recombinant interferon alpha2b for treatment of patients with HIV infection does not seem to be more effective in arresting the development of the disease than the use of zidovudine alone. Of 139 patients randomly selected to use combination therapy over a 12 month period compared to 117 using zidovudine alone, there was no significant difference in curative results between the two. But patients who were using the combination therapy seemed to undergo more uncomfotable side effects such as fatigue, myalgia, sweating, greater weight loss, a higher number of abnormal laboratory test results.

A randomized, controlled, double-blind study comparing the survival benefit of four different reverse transcriptase inhibitor therapies (three-drug, two-drug, and alternating drug) for the treatment of advanced AIDS
Article Abstract:
A combination of three reverse transciptase inhibitors may prolong life and delay disease progression in AIDS patients. Reverse transciptase inhibitors are drugs that inhibit HIV. Researchers evaluated several different combinations of reverse transciptase inhibitors, including zidovudine alternating with another drug, zidovudine plus one other drug, and zidovudine plus two other drugs. Triple therapy led to longer survival times and longer periods before the disease progressed.

Safety and antiviral activity of combination therapy with zidovudine, zalcitabine, and two doses on interferon-alpha2a in patients with HIV
Article Abstract:
This is the result of a randomized trial to determine how effective, if at all, a combination of zidovudine, zalcitabine and interferon alpha 2a might be for patients with HIV infection. The interferon was temporarily effective but at the cost of increasing blood toxicity and causing unpleasant side effects.
