Placental blood as a source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation into unrelated recipients
Article Abstract:
Placental stem cells from unrelated donors appear to be effective in treating children with various blood diseases even if the transplant is not a perfect match. Twenty-five people, mostly children, with blood diseases were given stem cell transplants from the Placental Blood Program at the New York Blood Center. The transplants were successful in 23 of the patients even though the match was complete in only 1 patient. Graft-versus-host disease, a complication of marrow transplantation, was mild in all but 2 patients.

Transplantation of umbilical-cord blood in babies with infantile Krabbe's disease
Article Abstract:
The newborns having no symptoms of any illness with Infantile Krabbe's diseases was diagnosed at or before birth and the ones who underwent the transplantation of the umbilical-cord blood possess progressive myelination and such gains in several developmental skills. Data suggests that, the transplantation of the umbilical-cord blood mainly alters the natural history of infantile krabbe's if it is performed before the symptoms.

Cord-blood transplants from unrelated donors in patients with Hurler's syndrome
Article Abstract:
Hurler's syndrome which causes progressive deterioration of the central nervous system and death in childhood is discussed. Cord blood from unrelated donors appears to be an excellent source of stem cells for transplantation in patients with Hurler's syndrome.
