Planning the future
Article Abstract:
The introduction of the UK govt's community care programme on Apr 1 1993 is expected to make improvements by community psychiatric nurses (CPNs). CPNs in Bath, UK, mainly deal with patients with long-term problems of mental health. CPNs are already establishing multidisciplinary assessments for patients coming from acute psychiatric wards. Care programming has defined the job specifications for each professional, but nurses are being confined more and more to the medical side, with less psychosocial work. However, the problem with this demarcation is that no one is sure where social support and health treatment meet. The inclusion of a panel for identified but unmet needs in care programming raises patients' expectations, which is perhaps unfair given the extent of community care funding.

Article Abstract:
An experiment in Aberdeen, Scotland, is aimed at finding new ways for health boards to buy health services. The experiment centres around the replacement of the Woodcot and Arduthie hospitals in Stonehaven by a new hospital, for which the contract for management, nursing and support services will be put out for tender by private companies. Critics see the experiment as a further step towards privatizing the National Health Service. The new development is being watched closely by other health boards.
