Portable defibrillators: jump-starting the heart
Article Abstract:
Portable automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are being used in ambulances, airlines, airports, casinos and some sports venues. The portable defibrillators are used during cardiac arrest, when the heart must be shocked back into normal rhythm, as quickly as possible, to save lives. It may be used on-site or in route to an emergency room. Many states are enacting laws to protect lay users of the devices, so that more people may be trained to use them. AEDs may then be used in large office buildings, shopping malls, and amusement parks.
