Post-registration study: the way ahead
Article Abstract:
Registered nurses have three interdependent avenues of further study open to them. These avenues are academic, clinical and professional. Academic study is underpinned by the credit accumulation transfer scheme, which awards credits both for courses undertaken and for prior learning. The accumulation of 360 credits indicates academic qualification to a standard equivalent to a three-year university degree. The ENB offers most of the courses for clinical development. Professional development will be part of most courses, but nurses usually update their professional knowledge in personal study.

PREP: the key to safe practice and to upholding standards
Article Abstract:
All qualified UK nursing practitioners will be participating in PREP from Apr 1998. Some practitioners believe that their obligations under PREP will be onerous or expensive, but this is not the case. Practitioners do not necessarily have to pay for expensive courses. The obligation to undertake five days of study during three years could mean attending a conference or observing another care area. Practitioners also need to update their personal professional profiles only when they learn or observe something new, and they can choose their own format for the profiles.
