Positive attitudes required
Article Abstract:
More money should be invested in establishing a programme to train UK midwives to offer pregnant women a test which would determine the presence of the HIV virus. Over 75% of HIV positive mothers are unaware they carry the virus. A simple test would help midwives counsel pregnant women about how to cope with the virus if they wish to continue with the pregnancy. Researchers found midwives who had received specific training in connection with HIV testing could have a positive influence on the decisions taken by pregnant women who were offered the test.

Reaching Rabaraba
Article Abstract:
Women giving birth in remote villages of Papua New Guinea are being offered help in the form of village birth attendants (VBAs), who are given an intensive three-week course on childbirth and antenatal care. Papua New Guinea has the highest infant and maternal mortality rate in the world, mainly due to the geographical nature of the island and the widely dispersed and uneducated population. women are chosen from their own communities to be trained as VBAs, with a support network established in the case of emergencies.
