Potential value of fetal echocardiography in the differential diagnosis of twin pregnancy with presence of polyhydramnios-oligohydramnios syndrome
Article Abstract:
Fetal heart function features, as measured by echocardiography, can be useful tools to distinguish twins with the twin-twin transfusion syndrome from those with placental insufficiency. Fetal echocardiographic measurements were compared with actual birth condition among 13 twin sets with suspected fluid imbalances. Lower left heart output, shortening fraction, and wall thickness were abnormal in the twins with twin-twin transfusion syndrome while these features were normal in the twins with placental insufficiency. Eight twin sets had placental insufficiency while five had twin-twin transfusion syndrome.

Placenta percreta: balloon occlusion and embolization of the internal iliac arteries to reduce intraoperative blood losses
Article Abstract:
Placenta percreta may cause substantial blood loss and even death if not managed correctly. Placenta percreta occurs when the placenta grows into and through the uterine muscle wall. A 32-year-old and a 34-year-old woman both were diagnosed with placenta percreta while pregnant. Both women were delivered of healthy infants by carefully planned cesarean section. Before surgery, ultrasound scans were reviewed and surgeons developed an advance plan for controlling bleeding. Key arteries were occluded by balloon inflation and Gelfoam particles after delivery of the infant and prior to removal of the uterus.

Temporary balloon occlusion of the common iliac artery: New approach to bleeding control during cesarean hysterectomy for placenta percreta
Article Abstract:
A case was reported wherein a placenta percreta was referred at 31 weeks' gestation and a cesarean hysterectomy was performed. This was preceded by placement of occlusive balloon catheters at bilateral common iliac arteries at 34 weeks' gestation to control profuse bleeding during operation.
