Prevention of infective endocarditis: guidelines from the American Heart Association
Article Abstract:
Updates to the recommendations of the American Heart Association on the prevention of infective endocarditis (IE) published in 1997 are discussed. An extremely small number cases of IE may be prevented by antibiotic prophylaxis, and prophylaxis should be recommended only for patients with the highest risk from IE.
