Racial/Ethnic Group Differences in the Prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the United States: A Network Explanation
Article Abstract:
African-Americans probably have a greater risk of sexually transmitted diseases because of the way they choose sexual partners. Analysis of data on 1,511 men and 1,921 women from the National Health and Social Life Survey reveal that African-Americans are almost five times more likely to contract a sexually transmitted disease than other ethnic groups. Compared to whites, African-Americans who have had few sexual partners are five times more likely to choose a partner who has had many partners in the past.

Carrageenan-based Nonoxynol-9 spermicides for prevention of sexually transmitted infections
Article Abstract:
The formulations of Nonoxynol-9 which are based on carrageenan seem to provide more protection from herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) than other existing over-the-counter spermicides. Concern that over the counter spermicides may not provide enough protection predicated a study on mice using pretreatment with test formulations followed by exposure to vaginal inoculation with HSV-2. It was found that the carrageenan based Nonoxynol-9 was much more effective.
