Article Abstract:
There are an estimated 3,800 active occupational health (OH) nurses in the UK in 1998 with a remit to deal with all aspects of work-related illness. Nurses undertake the majority of OH activities with many taking further qualifications to become specialist practitioners. Many OH nurses feel undervalued in their role leading to job stress and ill health. Health trusts must address the issue of stress management for nursing staff with helplines and counselling proving especially important in offering advice.
