Repeat performance
Article Abstract:
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the European Community work display equipment directive, holds employers responsible for the provision of safe working practices and the reduction of employee health and safety risks. RSI (repetitive strain industry) can be prevented through better job and ergonomic working environment design. Keyboard entry workers should be encouraged to take short breaks, rotate jobs, not spend more than 5 hours a day on the VDU and input not more that 10,000 words an hour. Ergonomic design should be included in furniture, terminals, keyboards, copy holders and lighting. Maltron (curved keyboards) should be supplied.

Back strain rated higher than RSI by employers
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken by the Trades Union Congress indicates that only 17% of businesses in the UK calculate the costs of back strain, with only 11% being aware of the financial impact of repetitive strain injury (RSI). Only 43% of employers monitor the number of days lost as a result of back strain, while only 29% are aware of the number of days lost through RSI. Risk assessments are used to address back strain in 56% of workplaces, but are only being used for RSI in 38% of workplaces.
