Re:processing
Article Abstract:
The production of nuclear waste and the processing of such waste is discussed. Nuclear waste exists as a result of UK nuclear operations for more than forty years. This waste and any waste made by nuclear power stations already in use or being built will have to be dealt with beyond the year 2000. Waste will also be produced by the research and defence industries, industry in general and hospitals. Managing director of United Kingdom Nirex Limited, Tony Corfield, considers nuclear power essential worldwide and that his company can safely handle the waste for which it is responsible, which is low-level and intermediate waste. Under UK government policy high-level waste is stored at source for fifty years at least. The allegation that the UK stores waste from other countries is disputed. Methods of storing waste and the choice of Sellafield as a site for disposal of nuclear waste, discharges into the sea from Sellafield, investment in treating only some kinds of nuclear waste, the education of the public about radioactivity, and the transportation of nuclear waste, are also discussed.
