Riding the time bomb
Article Abstract:
A mental health nurse discusses the effects which living with the HIV infection has had on one of his patients. The patient has been so concerned about his condition that he has felt suicidal. He is very distressed by watching his friends die and feels that by taking antiretroviral drugs he is just prolonging the agony. Nurses need to consider not only the patient's physical condition but also their mental and psychological state if drug therapies are to be used effectively.

Teaching and learning in lay-bys
Article Abstract:
A community psychiatric nurse (CPN) often takes time out between appointments to reflect on what he has done, and to analyse and evaluate his procedures. The CPN also shares this time with student nurses, doctors and social workers who accompany him. He believes this impromptu learning encourages service providers to lay aside concerns about market forces and to focus more closely on the experiences of the patient and the effects of the nurse's interaction with him or her.
