Safety measures
Article Abstract:
Health visitors, midwives and nurses can use clinical supervision as a means for discussing their work with other professionals, with a framework particularly appropriate for the provision of clinical support due to the changes taking place in primary health care. A workshop established for community nurses in Oxford, England, helped the nurses to clarify their needs while determining areas requiring development, such as child protection and teamwork. The workshop developed a practioner-led strategy and clinical supervision was acknowledged as playing a vital role in good practice.

The aggressive ward visitor: a critical incident analysis
Article Abstract:
An incident involving an aggressive hospital ward visitor has become a working example for nursing management classes. Difficult visitors or patient relatives who threaten or practice violence in the ward should be dealt with using specific interpersonal skills which are founded on a good understanding of the reasons causing the aggressive behaviour. An attempt should be made to defuse the situation, and the success of doing so is likely to depend upon the experience of the nurse in charge.
