Article Abstract:
There are very few legal liabilities that might prevent dentists from providing charity care. A 1997 survey by the American Dental Association found that 61% of the dentists surveyed had provided charity care in 1996. Most insurance companies would cover any dentist who is sued for malpractice while providing charity care. The care does not have to be provided in the dentist's office but could be provided in private homes, nursing homes, clinics, and health fairs. Some companies offer a part-time policy for retired dentists who may want to provide charity care. Dentists should also check local and state laws.

Reporting abuse and neglect: dentists face an expanded ethical duty to inform authorities of possible abuse or neglect of all patients, regardless of age
Article Abstract:
The American Dental Association House of Delegates amended the ADA's ethical code to urge dentists to report patients who appear to have been abused or neglected. This includes obvious signs of abuse anywhere on the body, not just in the mouth. It also includes people of any age, not just children. Many states grant immunity to people who report abuse provided the person reporting the abuse stays within the law. In some states, it is crime not to report suspected abuse.
