Scientists probe ways to curb opioid abuse without hindering pain treatment
Article Abstract:
Increase in abuse of opioid pain medications have induced physicians to find ways of preventing abuse of pain medications while ensuring the patients get required pain relief. Scientists and clinicians are conducting research to reduce opioid abuse by developing drugs that are less addictive, finding safer prescribing techniques and finding ways to identify patients with substance abuse problems.

Genome provides clues on addiction
Article Abstract:
A team of scientists from the UK and the US are scanning the entire human genome to find clues to genes playing a role in opioid dependence by searching the genomes of nearly 400 families with at least one individual who was dependent on opioids. Their findings indicate a few regions in the genome that appear to modulate an individual's risk of developing opioid dependence.
