Shared governance as a way to involve staff in decision-making
Article Abstract:
The shared governance model is one option for extending the involvement of clinicians in health policy decision-making. Around 10 UK organisations have introduced this model, which was developed in the US and is based on network management. It has four options for the structure of the network. Kettering General Hospital NHS Trust has introduced the councillor model. The nursing structure has four working councils, consisting of nurses of all levels and chaired by a staff nurse, looking at different areas of policy. These councils report to a nursing council which liaises with the trust board.

Rehabilitation using therapeutic community principles
Article Abstract:
The use of therapeutic community principles can help patients with severe behavioural problems to participate in the community to a greater extend. Therapeutic community principles cover the management of patients in a democratic and communal manner, which helps them learn to control their behaviour in a more socially acceptable way. Long term mental health patients are often trapped in a cycle of behavioural problems because of the isolating nature of institutions. Therapeutic community principles help them to manage their behaviour.
