Shattered dreams
Article Abstract:
The London Lighthouse residential unit for patients with HIV/AIDS closed in Aug 1998 after 10 years of unique service. The 23-bed unit opened at a time of widespread fear and lack of understanding of AIDS and HIV. It began as a nurse-led unit with a holistic approach and a dedication to user empowerment. Patients and staff testify to the benefits of a system in which nurses developed more informal ways of working in partnership with patients. The organisation became more closely involved in the administration of the unit as time progressed and nurse leadership became more difficult.

Handling HIV
Article Abstract:
Nurses are fearful of dealing with HIV-positive patients, but much can be done to prevent spread of the infection. Nurses should wear protective clothing, dispose of contaminated waste properly, and put impermeable dressings over their abrasions or cuts. They should also avoid using sharps, and control surface contamination. Hand-washing and basic hygiene should be practised. Information on how the disease is normally transmitted and how nurses may get the infection by caring for an HIV-positive person is also presented.
