Should the NHS buy failing nursing homes?
Article Abstract:
Contrasting views are presented on whether the UK National Health Service should purchase failing nursing homes. Doing so could be interpreted as a practical expression of a commitment to protecting older people and giving them wider choice. However, it would also mean that local authorities are relieved of their responsibility to appropriately fund the care of older people.

Nurse or potato peeler?
Article Abstract:
Staff conditions in private nursing homes should be monitored to prevent exploitation. Nurses may have to carry out domestic as well as nursing duties. However, they have no redress against exploitation. Local authorities check care and staff levels but neglect conditions of service. Pay is low, hours are long and training opportunities are generally unavailable.

The UKCC has recommended that nursing home owners should implement effective financial procedures to safeguard residents' financial interests, following the disciplining of a number of nurses for misappropriating and mismanaging the money of residents. Residents require access to their own pocket money to maintain independence and self-esteem.
