Sleep, older people and dementia
Article Abstract:
Sleep difficulties encountered by carers of elderly dementia sufferers often leds to early institutionalization, although research has highlighted the benefit of early sleep problem diagnosis and treatment delaying the need for long term care. Sleep difficulties may have either physical or psychological origins, therefore it is important for an assessment to be made of the patient to determine which treatment would be most beneficial. Careful management of sleep disorders in patients suffering from dementia can drastically improve quality of life for both the patient and carer.

Dementia care in the community: an opportunity for collaboration
Article Abstract:
The establishment of a referral system for patients with dementia has been a success in Glasgow, providing social workers and community nursing staff with a opportunity to work together and develop multi-agency delivery methods. The Coordination of Assessment and Resources in dementia (CARD) system assesses patients on a points system, helping to identity which type of care is needed, be it medical or social. The assessment programme is also helpful for carers, who need the support and advice of care services.
