South African health reforms threaten heart transplants
Article Abstract:
The future of heart transplants in South Africa is unsure as the country's post-apartheid government makes efforts to meet the preventive and primary care needs of the population that lives in medically underserved areas. South Africa's government needs to restructure the country's health care system and increase financing of tertiary-care hospitals and state clinics. The precarious financial situation of hospitals that perform heart transplants might force them to opt for less expensive cardiac surgery procedures.

Riding herd on injuries
Article Abstract:
Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, TX, which runs the busiest trauma center in the US, was threatened with overload when the city considered closing at least one of its three trauma centers. Instead, the decision was made to send the less severely injured to other hospitals and to establish the Greater Dallas Injury Prevention Center. In addition to injury research, the center wages a publicity campaign to reduce the number and severity of automobile accidents and gunshot wounds in the Dallas metropolitan area.

Humana hands D.C. HMO challenges to Kaiser
Article Abstract:
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States Inc. is discussing a deal to acquire Group Health Association (GHA) Inc. from Humana Health Care Plans. Acquiring the health maintenance organization (HMO) would allow Kaiser to boosts its membership in the Washington, D.C., area by over 100,000 members. Kaiser is in a better position to manage the HMO since its nonprofit status would be a strong match with GHA's tradition.
