Speaking out
Article Abstract:
The issue of assessing quality of long-term care for the elderly generates much heated debate in the UK. The debate can be harmful, as advocates of different options for addressing quality defend their own solution and attack others. Approaches to quality assurance include external regulation, peer review, staff training and user involvement. The government should develop a regulatory system which covers all the issues involved in quality care of the elderly and apply this to all homes, and this regulatory system should be accompanied by a programme for professional development.
