Nitric oxide signaling mechanisms in the forearm vasculature of pregnant women
Article Abstract:
A reduction in blood flow in the forearm of pregnant women does not affect nitric oxide activity. This demonstrates that it is not just increased blood flow during pregnancy that stimulates nitric oxide production, which in turn relaxes blood vessels.

Nitric oxide mediation of cardiac receptor reflex responses in the pregnant rat
Article Abstract:
Nitric oxide may not have a substantial effect on blood pressure and sympathetic nerve activity in the pregnant rat. Production of nitric oxide, which causes blood vessel dilation and is involved in blood pressure regulation, is increased in pregnancy. Researchers studied the effect of nitric oxide by injecting a nitric oxide blocking agent into the dorsal medulla of the brain in pregnant and virgin rats. The injection did not change blood pressure and sympathetic tone in the pregnant rats. Nitric oxide was released by all rats when blood volume in the heart was increased.

Stimulated nitric oxide release and nitric oxide sensitivity in forearm arterial vasculature during normotensive and preeclamptic pregnancy
Article Abstract:
Pregnant women do not appear to become more sensitive to nitric oxide but changes in the production of nitric oxide may cause the drop in blood-vessel resistance that occurs in pregnancy. This was the conclusion of researchers who measured blood flow in 19 pregnant women and 10 non-pregnant women after giving them drugs that stimulate nitric oxide production.
