Stopping them starting: evaluation of a community-based project to discourage teenage smoking in Cardiff
Article Abstract:
The project in Cardiff, Wales, UK, targeted young people aged between 11 and 12 to try to stop them starting to smoke. Literature was issued in 23 schools, four of which were selected for specific intervention. Specialist workers were enlisted to promote the no-smoking message in these schools, and in youth clubs and sports centres. Young people in the four target schools appeared less likely to start smoking. However, if prevention is given a low priority by health education groups and extra resources are not made available, the long-term effects of prevention projects will be limited.

The European Network of Health Promoting Schools: development and evaluation in Northern Ireland
Article Abstract:
The European Network of Health Promoting Schools scheme has allowed existing health promotion work in Northern Irish schools to be better documented, thus ensuring that it can be of use to all schools. There has been a firm commitment to health promotion in participating schools, and primary school teachers in particular have welcomed training, funding, advice and help with planning. In many cases, schools have linked health promotion work with pastoral care and education for mutual understanding programmes.
