Subcontract for safety first
Article Abstract:
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has mandated that construction companies be held liable for their subcontractors' behavior to prevent worker accidents and injuries. This has led construction companies to develop well-planned safety programs and make careful selections of their subcontractors to comply with OSHA's safety policies. Prequalification procedures, writing down safety provisions and site-specific safety plans and maintaining good relations with subcontractors will help ensure the proper execution of safety procedures.

Fall-protection rules still in the air: OSHA delays leave industry hanging (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)(includes related article)
Article Abstract:
Implementation of additional fall-protection rules is delayed and industries report continuing fatalities due to lack of fall-protection equipment. Opposition from some labor and industry factions contribute to this delay, along with the failure of OSHA and the American National Standards Institute to agree on standards. Workers themselves are reluctant to use these safety measures because they restrict movements. It is necessary for employers to understand that the law protects the industries, thus making implementation easy.

Proper fall protection saves lives
Article Abstract:
The OSHA issued fall-protection regulations in Feb. 1995 to reduce or eliminate injuries caused by falls in the workplace, especially in the construction industry. The regulations require construction companies to incorporate engineering designs with safety measures, use personal-protective equipment and to establish a fall-protection system consisting of scaffold shoring, platforms and nets to protect workers from falls.
