Swingeing London
Article Abstract:
Hospitals in London, England, are increasingly facing threats of cuts and closures but the government is unlikely to intervene. According to King's Fund report on services in the capital a maximum of 30 of the current acute care units are needed. University College and Middlesex hospitals are the most vulnerable and face a shortfall estimated at 20 million pounds sterling in 1992, of which cuts will account for just 6 million pounds sterling. Health Sec Virginia Bottomley is firmly against intervention in the National Health Services market and is focusing on primary healthcare. The outcome of the Tomlinson report due to appear in Sep 1992 may be too late to save some London hospitals from closure.

...How are they shaping up?
Article Abstract:
So far, little has changed for nurses working within the first wave of National Health Service (NHS) trusts, but the outcome of the general election will have an effect. The little change is mainly due to the fact that most nurses have contracts dated previous to the trusts, and the trusts have avoided any bad publicity over conditions or pay. It is predicted that employment practices for nurses could alter dramatically. Collective bargaining recognition agreements have only been launched by 21 of the first-wave trusts, according to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). The Mount Vernon Trust has decided to ignore previous NHS service for working out sick pay and redundancy on the NHS.

Trusts...
Article Abstract:
The pay and conditions of the 150,000 trust employees will be affected by the National Health Services' (NHS) first-wave of 57 trusts. Two-thirds of NHS workers will be employed in trusts in 1993. A further 95 trusts will be created on April 1 1992, and 153 in 1993. A survey of the present trusts shows that pay within many trusts will only be discussed by some staff organisations employed there. It is therefore doubtful if special groups' interests will be properly represented if the groups are absent from the negotiations.
