Teaching patients to be better insurance owners, users
Article Abstract:
The Colorado Medical Society has implemented a voluntary program for doctors to supply patients with information about their educational and disciplinary backgrounds. The society has also helped pursue a similar disclosure plan for health insurers, leading to a requirement in 1998 that health plans in Colorado provide information to potential enrollees about benefits and costs. Another effort is under way to put information about health insurers on the Internet.

Article Abstract:
There are more physicians and the spouses of physicians that are running for Congress and the state legislatures in 1996 than previously. There should be more physicians in legislative offices to ensure adequate representation of pertinent issues. The American Medical Assn is also important for ensuring that physicians' issues are addressed in legislatures throughout the US.
