The McRoberts' maneuver for the alleviation of shoulder dystocia: how successful is it?
Article Abstract:
The McRoberts' maneuver for delivering an infant's impacted shoulder may be the best initial technique to use in difficult shoulder delivery. Researchers reviewed 250 cases of difficult shoulder delivery over a four year period. Use of the McRoberts' maneuver alone resulted in 98 successful deliveries (42%). The McRoberts' maneuver worked better on infants with lower birth weights, shorter active phases of labor, and shorter pushing stages. The McRoberts' maneuver consists of flexing the patient's legs so the infant's shoulders can pass over the mother's straightened spine.

Obstetric maneuvers for shoulder dystocia and associated fetal morbidity
Article Abstract:
Fetal manipulation to treat shoulder dystocia during childbirth does not appear to increase the risk of injury. Shoulder dystocia occurs when the baby's head appears but the rest of the body is not easily delivered. At one hospital, a review of 285 cases of shoulder dystocia found that 25% of the infants were injured during delivery. Fractures of the collarbone and upper arm were most common, in addition to nerve damage. Fetal manipulation did not increase the incidence of bone fractures or nerve damage.

Shoulder dystocia: Are historic risk factors reliable predictors?
Article Abstract:
The rate of associated risk factors for shoulder dystocia from a large cohort of patients delivered within the Southern California perinatal program is determined. The results revealed that historic obstetric risk factors for shoulder dystocia are not useful predictors for the event.
